Our Mission/Mandate
We are an Education and Advocacy Organization dedicated to promoting and assisting in the recruitment, training and retention of women in skilled trades and technology.
We are incorporated as a Non-profit, Non-government organization.
YWITT is all about getting the word out to women of all ages about the high paying, hands-on, rewarding careers in the trades and then:
We want to increase the participation of women in well-paying, in-demand and respected trades and technology jobs through projects designed for women.
We truly believe that gender should not be a barrier to pursuing opportunities in a workplace that needs highly skilled and technologically literate employees.
Women make up nearly half of the Yukon’s paid labour force (49.7%) but tend to be concentrated in jobs that pay less than those of men. An occupational segregation exists in which many traditional male occupations pay higher wages than the traditional female occupations and these are the very occupations women have traditionally not entered. Making women of all ages aware that the skilled trades have high hourly wages and that it is possible to ‘earn while you learn’, will help contribute to their making choices that will enhance their life skills and employability as well as helping to alleviate the current and future shortage of skilled workers locally and nationally.
