Stories from Transgender Tradespeople in the Yukon

This campaign grew from something we kept hearing: Two-Spirit, transgender, and gender-diverse tradespeople need spaces to connect, share, and find community in industries that can often feel isolating.

We are grateful to share these stories with the broader community so more people can understand the complex nature of working in a trade while honouring one's unique identity.

Our research

In order to better understand the context in which Yukon tradespeople – and women among them – work and study, YWITT conducts ongoing research projects with tradespeople and apprentices, employers, industry representatives, unions, instructors, administrators and NGOs who work with women in trades.

Making it Work

The 2019 report brought to the forefront the experiences of Yukon women in the skilled trades and made recommendations for the industry to improve worker retention and competitive growth.

The study highlighted several issues that women in the skilled trades face, including harassment in the workplace and the lack of support necessary for them to develop rewarding careers.

This study was funded by Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC).

Doing it Right

The right support at the right time makes all the difference when it comes to growing Yukon’s skilled trades labour force and industries.

With support from Government of Canada’s Future Skills Program, we were able to spend 2 years with 26 tradespeople creating and piloting solutions to the industry’s challenge of retention.

The report shares our findings about critical moments in career trajectories for women and gender-diverse individuals in the skilled trades where support is essential and what support has the most impact.
