Why did you choose to work in the trades?
What brings you joy in your line of work?
I chose to work in the trades because I realized while studying in University that I couldn't handle sitting at a desk, or being indoors, all day, every day. My studies led me to explore different career paths numerous times until I finally found my passion for the forest. I love working outside and splitting my time between gathering data, managing operations, and analyzing results. Trees bring me joy in my line of work, I love looking at forest stands and guessing their history just by looking at their structure and composition.
What do you want people to know about Two-Spirit, trans, and/or gender diverse folks who work in the trades?
I'd like people to know that most Two-Spirit, trans, and/or gender diverse folks who work in the trades are no different than anyone else. We deserve just as much respect as others, and are able to offer respect when given.
What is your advice to other Two-Spirit, trans, and/or gender diverse folks who are considering entering the trades? What do you wish you knew?
My advice is to find something you're passionate about and pursue it regardless of others opinions. It took me a long time to find what brings me joy because I was constantly being told that I'd never find work or make enough money to live off of the career I wanted. I'd also say it's important to explore all your options for different companies to work for. If you're not happy in your current workplace, try a different organization. I worked for a large company for several years and thought I would work there forever, with the hopes of moving up the corporate ladder. However, the working conditions weren't great and I was dismissed as soon as I got a non-work-related injury. At the time it felt like the end of the world, but it allowed me to start looking around for other opportunities and I found an incredible company to work for, who showed me how employees can/should be treated in the workplace.
What is your dream future for Two-Spirit, trans, and/or gender diverse folks working in the trades?
My dream future for Two-Spirit, trans, and/or gender diverse folks working in the trades is to automatically be asked and spoken to with the correct pronouns by clients and co-workers. I'd love to work in a place where pronouns are not assumed based on your presentation.
